Quick look at tomorrow’s big races. Sprint - 1200m a maximum field and track bias a complete unknown. The first three from the Sprint Trophy at Haydock re-oppose and it’s not easy to call between them. KINROSS always runs his race but at 1200m he’s vulnerable. AUDIENCE could be a player at a price - he’s another 1400m type but we know he goes on soft turf. He would be an each way play at 12s in a wide open race.

SAYEDATY SADATY catches my eye if he’s anywhere near his Derby form off a featherweight. Imagine if CITY OF TROY were in this off 8 stone 5 lbs. BUCKAROO never ran 2400m up here but it always seemed an option but I know he’s had one run and didn’t perform. VALIANT KING was sixth in this last year when trained by Joseph O’Brien but has done nothing in two runs since. Is this a better renewal? If not, he’d have claims.

Apologies. Off grid at the moment in the middle of rural Derbyshire currently - long story and won’t bore you now. I’ll try to put up some selections and thoughts for Champions Day at Ascot later today. The races on the Round course will be run on what is called the “Inner Flat” track - basically the hurdles course used by the jumpers - after more rain on Wednesday made the usual round turf course waterlogged in places. The ground is Soft on both the straight and Inner Flat courses this morning.

Saturday shopping was the beginning of the end of big crowds going to the races . Quote , The National government passed the Shop Trading Hours Amendment Act 1980, allowing Saturday trading. An increasing number of shops began to open on Saturdays and the nature of the weekend changed again. Saturday trading also meant the end of Friday late-night shopping, although Friday nights remained a time for people to eat, drink and socialise in town after work. Saturday was still the main day for sports activities, although sports events began to be held on Sundays and Friday nights. While many people continued to play and watch sport, it no longer had the central role in communities it had in the past RACING INCLUDED -
It doesn't seem to matter how long one follows racing, human beings can still come up with new ways of stuffing up!!! I've certainly never seen a situation where a race has been run over the wrong distance before. I have now. What next?

Race book said 1609 and that is where they started from. Fields in HRNZ web site said 1700. Who is to blame? Presume there will be an official explanation - probably a naughty naughty to someone together with the proverbial wet bus ticket. Stipes report not published as yet

Yes. Decades ago we needed every minute of the 35-40 minutes between races. Big crowds on course AND slow service due to a lack of technology like we have today. Man those tote operators deserved every cent they earned back then. Everything is so clinical and impersonal today. And of course if you want to follow more than one meeting, that's so much easier to do from home.

It's a complete joke. I sometimes wonder if I'm in a parallel universe. He is the worst tipster in the World bar none. His 3 at Alex Park tonight .. Bolt for the Hill nowhere, Aye Aye Captain nowhere, and Double Parked 3rd in 7 horse field no divvy. And week after week after week they put this garbage on Trackside.

Agree about Trackside, but bloody rugby. It is drowning every other sport and people are over it. It's our national sport yes, but there is no need to overkill. Every form and age group, and competition is filling the sports channels, massive turn off. Because this country is obsessed with Rugby all other sports along with racing suffers in my opinion.

Oh the memories, certainly some very tidy performers you've mentioned, sounded like you enjoyed your travels to the small country meetings, by far the best in my opinion, even these days, the metropolitan meetings certainly don't have the same appeal to me, powley one of my favorites of that era, can remember the day I heard of her demise on the way back to the south island, so sad and unfair. As for racing where did it go wrong, a wise man said to me once, they introduction of paid officials would be its downfall, the early days so much was voluntary, right down to the steward on the birdcage gate, these days the industry very top heavy with overpaid salaries, interesting thing most of the smaller clubs with the picnic meetings that draw the crowds and get the turnovers, yet seem to be the ones for the chop, unfortunately the next generation are busy with their gaming and other interests, certainly a sad state of affairs, and the good ole days you mention have long gone, never to return.

Have you had a look at the Europeans in the Caulfield Cup tomorrow Stodge ? I’m interested in Valiant King at big odds. Those runs behind Desert Hero and Vauban would put him right in this.
