Animals (Basel) . 2024 Jan 8;14(2):207. doi: 10.3390/ani14020207 Cross-Sectional Survey of Public Perception of Commercial Greyhound Racing in New Zealand Kristie E Cameron 1,*, Alison Vaughan 2, Marie J McAninch 2, Kayla Briden 1, Arnja Dale 2 Editor: David Morton Abstract Simple Summary Commercial greyhound racing in New Zealand has been under scrutiny for its animal welfare practices for over a decade. In 2021, the greyhound racing industry was placed ‘on-notice’ by the New Zealand Racing Minister and Associate Minister of Agriculture (Animal Welfare) due to ongoing issues with data recording, transparency, and animal welfare generally. Social license was identified as a key factor in deciding the future of commercial greyhound racing in New Zealand. This paper describes the findings of a robust survey of the New Zealand public’s opinion towards commercial greyhound racing. The majority of survey respondents reported a negative view of the greyhound racing industry and indicated that, given the chance, they would vote in support of a ban on greyhound racing. The respondents reported a lack of involvement and knowledge of industry practices. These results confirm that the majority of the New Zealand public do not currently support the continuation of commercial greyhound racing in New Zealand. -
the problem here Mikey is exactly how many oppose..... it seems the minority rule...in a Democracy the majority should decide..... so why is it everything our Government pushes through is against public opinion......there should be nothing the government augments BEHIND CLOSED DOORS that should remain secret, and there shouldnt be anything in this Civilised society that hides ones health from another....if you have Aids big deal, but if you vaccinate your Death should be on the Record to avoid taxpayer loss over and over again.......your Health Decisions effect EVERYBODY........WHY WOULD A SANE PERSON BELIEVE ONE WORD MIKE BAKER PASSES THROUGH THOSE WELL FUNDED LIPS...MORENA, AOTEAROA....Trevor Wllkes will be turning in his grave...RIP

Nice to put a face to a name of a young driver with the same K Newman as the legendary Harold park driver Kevin….. Not a good look being heavy handed on the horses mouth yanking on the reins…. And what about the flat tyre…. But the swearing is unneeded as is watched by people of all ages…..

And that is exactly the thing that will help send racing the way of the greyhounds.

That last sentence is B/S isnt it? The jockey suspect there is something amiss with the mare and stewards expect him ride the horse full out?

Thursday 12 December - Auckland Thoroughbred Racing at Ellerslie Race 3 STELLA ARTOIS MAIDEN 1200 SANTARELLI (W Pinn) - Co-trainer S Bergerson subsequently reported that the mare had been showing some signs of soreness when being loaded onto the horse transporter to return to their stable. SANTARELLI was then examined by the stable Veterinarian the following morning and confirmed to be lame in the right foreleg which was to be x-rayed and results advised to Stewards. W Pinn (SANTARELLI) - Following advice that the mare had pulled up sore following the race, after further consideration of the matter Stewards sought and were granted permission to withdraw the charge by the Adjudicator. Under the circumstances, W Pinn was advised that although Stewards were not proceeding with a charge on this occasion, he would be expected to ride his mounts out fully to the end of the race when circumstances permit.

I no longer have any involvement, but I have friends for whom greyhound racing is their livelihood and I despair for them, especially based on the manner and process around the announcement.

Perhaps they should follow the lead of Belgium which managed to operate for 652 days from 2018 until late 2020 without a government, even during covid. Would anyone notice if they didn't replace Sharrock? Perhaps they could take his salary and use it to fund a slot race at Kumara. Restricted to horses trained on the Coast. -

Yet subsequently the jumps review panel said: "Even those who supported the continuation of jumps identified a concern about use of the whip during the races, especially at the end of the races after the last jump" You might be right that they are deaf but the alternative possibility of dumb surely has to be considered. -

They listen maybe but don't think there is a problem. The last correspondence I had from NZTR on this was: “We are comfortable with the current Whip Rules and where they sit on an international scale” , and also that ”We have not seen a considerable negative impact from the current Rules” -
Gee how about Aaron White his top tip in the G1 tonight paying $51 fixed and got up. I generally ignore tips from trackside employees but caught my attention as I had just flicked the tv on to watch the feature trot. Kudos.

It looks exactly the same as it did nearly 40 years ago when I lived 5 mins up the road and went to nearly every raceday . Racing is flying .

I bellieve it is sunshine. So therein lies our problem. What a waste of space is Entain, particularly when their profits are destined for overseas. Or has nobody noticed that.
