For Charlie E,
Saw this on Trade Me quite a few years ago now... and just had to buy it.
I can't even remember what I paid for it but it sits nicely on my office wall along with a couple of other horsey photos along with my computer and TV which come in very handy on a Saturday afternoon.!! (sorry couldn't do much about the glare on the pic).
Done by Alister Simpson from Australia who is quite well known for his equine artistry, Google him to have a look at what he does.
It will be very interesting to see a similar report in another 20 years , in fact make that 10 years .
With breeding numbers declining and the number of horses sold out of NZ from sales , trials and race performance , we could have a pool of 200/300 horses added per year to our domestic racing . Dire .
Ever decreasing circles , get what you can while you can , enjoy it while you can .
Racing as we know it is on the decline .
Shame you haven't missed the country circuits, that have atmosphere, crowds, and close up racing action, may be trentham with none of the above may obvious appeal to you more.
Dont let facts in the way of your nonsense
Racing was also washed out in Brisbane after a 123mm rain bomb flooded huge sections of southeast Queensland, with Eagle Farm called off before a race was run.
The venue was on standby to host Saturday's meeting if the Gold Coast was unable to be raced on.
There are only a few horses in anyone's lifetime that are so good they capture the imagination of non-racegoers.
The ones I recall most readily are (before my time!) Phar Lap, Red Rum, Secretariat (GOAT), Bonecrusher, Sunline, Black Caviar, Frankel, Winx.
By now we should be starting to see significant benefits to the wider industry as a result of all those closures. Nothing really stands out though. I suppose stakes have increased at Ellerslie, but it is hard to attribute that to the closure of Tapanui, Beaumont, Orari and Waimate. The SI does have a white elephant AWT at the provincial Yaldhurst track. I suppose that makes the good people of Hokitika, Waimate etc feel it was all worthwhile.
Actually, no training that I know of at Hokitika, Westport, Nelson, Marlborough, Waimate, Tapanui, Beaumont and Motukarara. I'm no expert on Wairoa and Gisborne, but no superstars that I know of currently trained there.
Motukarara springs to mind. Timaru had a reprieve but is still on the list which will leave 2 tracks north of the Waitaki in the SI aside from the 3 west coast ones used one week a year. How can that work?
Can't say I've missed any of them , most of these tracks still exist as training centers so not totally lost to racing but just not needed for race days .
