    • Oh how the mighty has fallen. This from BBC sports Dettori 'embarrassed' after filing for bankruptcy   Image source,Getty Images Image caption, Frankie Dettori bid farewell to British racing with a double triumph at Ascot in October 2023 Published 1 hour ago Veteran jockey Frankie Dettori says he feels "embarrassed" after he filed for bankruptcy having been unable to reach agreement with His Majesty's Revenue and Customs over a long-running case of tax avoidance. The 54-year-old Italian, a mainstay of the British and European flat-racing scene for 37 years, has ridden more than 3,300 winners during his career. Dettori's financial situation became public knowledge in December last year when his plea for anonymity lodged in November was rejected by a High Court judge. The case was brought against Dettori after he had employed professional specialist tax advisers to oversee his and his family's financial affairs.   ADVERTISEMENT Dettori, who was awarded an MBE in 2001, terminated relations with those advisers last year and subsequently employed the services of a different set of financial experts in attempt to resolve the case. "For the last six months, my advisors have been working with HMRC in an attempt to find a solution to my financial situation," Dettori said in a statement. "I am saddened and embarrassed by this outcome and would advise others to take a stronger rein over their financial matters. "Bankruptcy is a major decision and its consequences will affect me for many years." It is estimated Dettori, now based in California, has earned between £15-£20m from racing alone. He has also made a name for himself outside racing, having been a captain on BBC programme A Question Of Sport, appeared on Celebrity Big Brother and I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here and opened a series of Italian restaurants. There has been no indication how much Milan-born Dettori, who partnered 287 Group One winners and rode all seven winners in one meeting at Ascot in September 1996, owed. A HMRC spokesperson said: "We take a supportive approach to dealing with customers who have tax debts and do everything we can to help those who engage with us to get out of debt, such as offering instalment plans." Dettori stopped riding in the UK in 2023 but has continued his career in the United States and says he now hopes to be able to concentrate on his day job. "I am relieved to be drawing a line on this long-term matter, which enables me to reset and focus on my international riding career," he said.   BBC Sports

    • We are still friends. In fact he shouted me a vodka n’ soda, sitting on the outside deck of the Telford Bar at Trentham while he waited for his (and his daughter’s) filly to run in the Lowland while I waited for our horse to run in the lowly R65 2100m. 😉
    • An on going love affair with Leo Molloy?
    • Yes, unless you follow the trots closely it is hard to know what's going on. I find it intriguing that on a big night they feel the need to run two six horse maidens to get to 12 races. They must feel they will be profitable I suppose.  And it would be interesting to know what old timers like myself would have known the group 1 as in years gone by. I remember a year or so ago asking how people thought the change of racing seasons had gone, and whether it was a success. Not a single person had an opinion. I can just imagine there would have been a few comments if the gallops decided to start their season on 1 January.
    • Absolutely. Whilst our first one was at the opposite end of the spectrum (we bought her on our honeymoon - yes a weanling) that didn’t sell as a yearling, so we were forced to race her (51 years ago ridden and won by LJ Molley) and hence an ongoing love affair for Joan and me ever since.  Even though HD has intervened in a huge way (lately as my closest friends know) the show must go on!  Now start laughing…. It’s the Castlepoint Cup on Saturday followed by the St ledger.  Is it crazy 52 years later! Horse wise, nothing has changed has it?

    • In my case l only knew the answer to one of your comments/queries/questions, and PS had already answered that one 🤣
    • That you for that Pure. I'm out of touch these days, but I have found that when I ask questions about harness things that hardly anyone ever answers. It makes me think that the harness contributors on here are pretty much focussed on the horses rather than any structural or other associated aspects of the industry.
    • Kiwignome has heard talk of the possibility of Caulfield races being brought forward due to the extreme heat forecast over there on Saturday.  This may necessitate a change in the posting so be aware - particularly you recidivist last minute posters Regardless of what happens with race start times please still enter your picks in the order of races listed above. I'll advise further on the order in whiuch races will be scored before kick-off.

    • It is an Initiative Australia and New Zealand wide. each race won by a female driver during a certain timeframe raises funds for cancer research. here's a cut and paste.  TEAM TEAL TO MAKE ITS MARK IN 2025   The 2025 Team Teal campaign has commenced, with Queensland’s harness racing industry coming together to raise funds for ovarian and gynaecological cancer research. Running until 15 March, the campaign will see the Queensland harness racing industry donate $200 for every race won by a reinswoman in the Sunshine State. This year, Chloe Butler and Taleah McMullen will serve as Queensland’s 2025 Team Teal ambassadors, leading the initiative. All Queensland reinswomen will wear teal-coloured pants to raise awareness for the cause. In 2024, Queensland’s female harness racing drivers raised over $15,000 for Team Teal, with more than $150,000 raised over 420 winners across Australasia. In conjunction with WomenCan, Team Teal donations will support the Australian and New Zealand Gynaecological Oncology Group’s Survivors Teaching Students program. The program educates future medical professionals to improve the diagnosis and care of women with gynaecological cancer.
