The lack of camber straightening up has always been there and wide horses improving ofter get bumped. But there is 380m to the finish and good horse can still win. No excuse for a stop - start pace

Plus in a pre-meeting interview (recorded but since deleted) they were talking about moving the rail entering the straight because the turn-in was too tight? That being the case, I'm assuming that'd make improving wide on the turn even more difficult than just the camber?
I'm not sure that is the case anymore certainly not as steep as it once was. Conversely a 1200m race is 1080 meters downhill at Ellerslie. The biggest difference is most races in Hong Kong are run at pace and every horse gets a chance over the last 400m.
The old race record for 1200m was 1:07.7. They'll never get close to that again. Sha Tin on a Strathayr is 1:07.5.

Shatin 1200 is absoutly flat, and races are run a breakneck speed. Ellersile has 120m uphill run from the barrier then you a turning all the way till the 380 straight , thats why races here are run slower.
To slightly digress. I thought the Auckland Cup was a "handicap" race. Can somebody with knowledge on the issue please explain how EVERY mare in the nominations , no matter what their rating, has been allocated the minimum of 53 kgs. Many geldings very lowly weighted and really only Interpretation with any sort of impost.
As I think @Insider has pointed out the issue is the camber on the bend, what there is of it, stops well before the bend ends. It has to in order to accommodate the 2400m shute which doesn't seem to have been moved at all.
So if you improve your position too soon you are left very wide turning on no camber and therefore become unbalanced. Add to that the shifty nature of the track because they are continually cutting it up to make it soft and horses just don't feel comfortable on it.
