    • The Canadians have answered…..here’s a list of things they won’t be buying……   7 hr 24 min ago "We don’t want to have this fight, but we won’t lose it," candidate for Canadian prime minister says on tariffs  From CNN’s Michael Rios Chrystia Freeland, Canada’s former finance minister who is running to replace Justin Trudeau as prime minister, told CNN’s Fareed Zakaria that her country is determined to stand up for itself after US President Donald Trump announced new tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China. “We don’t want to have this fight, but we are not going to lose it,” she said Sunday. Freeland called the tariffs a “terrible” idea and a “lose-lose” situation that will end up hurting Americans since they depend on Canada for many basic goods. “The president has decided now to make gas in the United States more expensive. He’s decided to make groceries in the United States more expensive. And our retaliation is going to cost Americans jobs. That is completely ridiculous. We do not want to do this,” she said. Freeland also said Canadian citizens have been so hurt and angered that some have already started to boycott American goods. “Regular Canadians across the country are coming up with ways to stand for Canada, to fight for Canada, to defend Canada, but mostly to say to our American neighbors: ‘Guys, just cut it out,’” Freeland said. Asked whether Canada would start looking for new markets and trading partners, Freeland said the country would prefer to continue working with the US but insisted the relationship should remain mutually beneficial. “We are happy to work together. But it’s got to be a two-way street,” she said.     https://www.canada.ca/en/department-finance/news/2025/02/list-of-products-from-the-united-states-subject-to-25-per-cent-tariffs-effective-february-4-2025.html

    • Gore's Top 6 R1 IMPERATIVE - Campbell hops aboard, and the dam has won 8 in this distance range. Stepping up after an eye-catching 6th, this one’s definitely worth a look. 2nd $1.70, led turn, run down late, will be better for the run.  R2 CHUPALLA - Dam won the Listed Great Easter Stakes. Has only had 4 runs and is still figuring out the racing game. Showed a determined run last start and looks to be coming to hand. 2nd $3.30. big run from near last, next up.  R3 THE RADIANT ONE - A super type I rated at 7.2, third best for the meeting. Loves the track and should win here. Sat outside leader, never settled, looked like needed run. R4 INTERCEPT - No Freddie Time in this one, so this horse can win. Slow out, never like the good 4 track at all, forget run.  R5 XRATED - A former North Islander who has everything needed to win today. Looks like a super show is in store. 1st $3.70 $1.60, Simply too good.  R8 FREDDIE TIME - Looks to be a star in the making. Just wins. Held up turn, will be better for the run in a field, watch. Roughies: R1 MISTER GOLDIE - Had a tough trip 3-wide last time out in stronger company. This is easier, so watch for improvement. Struggled to make ground, R5 JIBBITY - Better than shown recently. Was spotted making up ground last time and, while it would prefer firmer ground, is worth a big watch at odds.  Wide and posted on speed, then 3 back, out 400m, nice late run, watch next up. R6 SEFTON - Had no run in the home straight last time out. Will surprise a few here, for sure. 1st $9.00 $3.80, 3-4 wide the trip, amazing win.  R9 IN VEGAS - Big drop back in class and looks good to win from 4 at odds 1st $14.00 $4.00, strong late run.... too good. R10 FOREIGN AFFAIR - Shouldn’t be paying $5, Campbell rides and has a good draw. Definitely one to keep an eye on. 3rd $1.40, headed late

    • In simple terms, whaat does the "world pool" actually add to New Zealand racing. The only thing I've really read is that the take-out is larger? That sounds like a negative to me, but is the theory that it generates worldwide interest in certain races, thus higher turnover? In reality, does it work? i must be old and tired these days, as l thought interest in the "Kiwi" was higher when first announced than it is now when it's only a few weeks out. I guess it might ramp up again a week out, but is it really going to pay off? All that money to one lucky group of individuals? Are slot races sustainable in the long term? Do they only make the rich richer while the true battlers in the sport - which have always made for the best stories - are forced even further to the extremities? I can never see the Kiwi story - the horse from Waverley, not the slot races at Ellerslie- being repeated. Or another Bonecrusher being bought for pocket change. It's all rather clinical and boring today by comparison. More international, maybe, but better? I'm not so sure. So many people, clubs and tracks forced into extinction can't really be good, if they're not being replaced? Like many sports, rugby included, centralisation over participation doesn't appear to work in the long term.
    • But - as said by cleverer folk than moi - turnover isn't the metric, it's revenue that matters. How is that looking and how will it be looking in another 3.5 years when the largesse is reined in and NZTAB has to share 50/50 with Entain?
    • Words , words and more words .  If turnovers were that great they would be spruiking them everywhere to prove it . It's all good talking about the so called positives even if they are correct , but to just ignore other major issues we have thinking money is going to solve everything is asking for a right dicking eventually .

    • Came across this article on Racing .com  Rewind 12 months and there was an air of excitement about New Zealand racing. The Karaka meeting came on the back of a mega announcement which saw its feature calendar shaken up with prizemoney changes and the creation of the Southern Hemisphere's richest three-year-old race: The Kiwi. Fast forward to 2025 and that excitement has been justified, with New Zealand Racing in a strong position on and off the track. Is it? "I think this time last year the industry was coming to grips with whether (the changes) were sustainable and something that would work. This year it's a lot better because there's a lot more confidence that it is," Entain New Zealand's managing director Cameron Rodger said. "The changes we have made around the summer calendar are driving increases in turnover which will fund them for years to come. Really "It's an industry that's just as excited as before but ready to get on with it, if that makes sense." The addition of the World Pool also added an international flavour to Saturday's Karaka Millions meeting. "It's big for punters, right?" Rodger said. "But the bigger part for us is the exposure it brings to New Zealand Racing. To get this meeting and Champions Day (in the World Pool) … it's a real 'we've-arrived' moment for New Zealand racing." Rodger said New Zealand is 'bucking the global trends' when it comes to wagering turnover.  "It's helped a lot by the Entain partnership and improving the wagering offering.    A lot is to do with the changes to the summer calendar, for example," he said.  against the global standards of single-digit decline and double-digit decline in some jurisdictions. "We are thrilled with how it's been going in a tough economy." For me Cameron knows how to spruk an interview. Mind you Entain is run out of Oz not here from what i was told
