Great post! I have always advised people to stay away from SRM and multis in general. If punters got better odds when taking a multi, I'd recommend them, but they don't. Why waste a potential winning bet by culminating your original stake + profit onto another bet? It's not a long-term winning strategy, but punters often wrongly feel like they're getting better value with a multi. -

Same Race Multis (SRMs) - What do they really pay? Same Race Multis sound like a great option, especially given the TAB says you can get more value and maximise your odds. I mean they would never misrepresent the truth, otherwise the commerce commission would be after them and the government would not give them a monopoly... So you standard multiple runner bets are obviously your Quinellas, Trifectas and First 4s. All the money is comingled into a pool and the TAB takes out a fixed percentage. Call it what you want, statutory deduction, take out rate, rake, vig etc. If you place $1 on a random quinella bet, on average you will get $0.79 back. (1/0.79 = a 126.6% market) $1 on a random Trifecta or First 4, on average you will get $0.75 back. (1/0.75 = a 133.3% market) Interestingly on SRMs (or any fixed odds) there is no statutory rate, so the TAB can effectively take what they want... which is as little as possible. Furthermore they are not required to disclose the amount they are taking, like pokies or casinos do. With numerous runners in a field the maths can get a little labour intensive so no one would be bothered to work it out. Well, I am bothered, so here goes. Take a 13 horse field. If you select all the top Top 2 combinations you can replicate every combination of quinella and see the corresponding fixed odds. There are 78 possible quinella combinations. Divide each of these into 1 and add them up and you get the amount that TAB is returning to punters. The equivalent to a Quinella bet using SRM fixed odds returns $0.616 per $1.00. (1/0.616 = a 162.3% market) For the same 13 horse field; If you select all the top Top 3 combinations you can replicate every combination of Trifecta and see the corresponding fixed odds. There are 286 possible Trifecta combinations. Divide each of these into 1 and add them up and you get the amount that TAB is returning to punters. The equivalent to a Trifecta bet using SRM fixed odds returns $0.534 per $1.00. (1/0.534 = a 187.3% market) And finally, with the same 13 horse race; If you select all the top Top 4 combinations you can replicate every combination of a First 4 and see the corresponding odds. There are 715 possible First 4 combinations. Divide each of these into 1 and add them up and you get the amount that TAB is returning to punters. The equivalent to a First 4 bet using SRM fixed odds returns $0.484 per $1.00. (1/0.484 = a 206.5% market) And the odds get worse and worse, the bigger the field is. TAB/Entain - DISCLOSE HOW MUCH YOU ARE TAKING ON EACH MARKET!!! Punters, have a good day on the punt today. Stay away from SRMs and always do due diligence. -

I think he thought the hotpot in the first was going to run straight past but the leader was never headed. Six northern horses in a lower grade six horse field is a bit strange. Obviously a severe shortage of 2yos in the CD. -
