"and as a racing man you will know how many times that it is the sure thing that has let me down" Exactly this. People throw $1.40 chances into multis to boost payouts and they often get let down. Good luck mate! -
Haha , I often have 2 leg multis , small investment only , if I really like a $2 shot , I will put a small amount the odds horse simply so I can get a lump on the $2 and don't have to risk a large amount on the $2 shot . But I always have a small investment on the longer odds horses I have taken with the $2 shot . Just cover my bases . All I'm trying to do is get a decent amount on what I think is a good thing , and as a racing man you will know how many times that it is the sure thing that has let me down . Not trying to get rich , it's just a bit of fun now . It's racing .

Just seen this post . For a start I don't bet sports , I trust sportsmen less than I trust horses and jockeys . Secondly as I stated earlier I don't take lots of multi's anymore , especially in NZ , I regularly got plenty up but simply don't trust the riders anymore . So when I take them it's always Syd/Melb and only at the best meetings . When I did take them regularly I often backed one of the better odds runners if I really rated it . Plenty of weekends now where I don't have a bet . Next time I have a losing multi I'll just shrug and look to the next time I have a bet , I would do more than shrug if I followed your 2 units on 3 shorts and 1/2 lost . Good luck to you though .

I was using a $100 bet as an example. It could be a $1 bet, the principal is the same. My original post was suggesting a two-leg multi with $5 and $2 options, not three short favs. Different bets can't be painted with the same brush. -
It's viable if they all win . Risk and reward . Read my reply to SLB . I'll stick to my smaller bets for a greater return .
-
Well good luck to you , that is a riskier strategy than what I done . As I said it's racing and anything can happen , at those prices it's hard to get a decent return , and trying to get regular small returns is hard bloody work , on the heart as well as the pocket . I am happy to drop $50 on the prospect of a 600+% return than $600 for around 65% return , if all 3 win . But good luck to you .

Can't disagree with that! You don't bet NRL/AFL - I thought you were an Aussie? -
Don’t bet over Winter Only bet in MLB and NSW on premier days, very very selective. Haven’t bet in NZ for many years Again setting odds in my favour

I can understand that, Tom. It's great to land a big one, and like you, I don't use the TAB. I would just rather see punters profit from a week of betting, as opposed to putting all their eggs into a multi basket and going for broke, with broke being the keyword. All the best with your multis this week! I pray you land one. -
Well I am actually not a good friend of the TAB SLB, my bets are restricted a little reflecting past performance. True it ain’t hedging in the true sense but it is cashing out before you start. NM and I not looking for a minor return, say again … all duck no dinner. Your style of betting may get you back to where you started, maybe, but I love getting a 5k drop into my account …. and I aim for them, you don’t but each to their own

What's the weather like there? Wouldn't imagine it'll be a very pleasant night for horsemen or public.

And to answer your question on how I would bet your $1.65, $2, $1.65 multi. I'd put 2 units on each pick. If one unit is $100, that's $600 spent, and if I go 2/3, even with the $1.65 shots winning, I profit. -

If singles aren't viable, how can a multi on those singles be? -

How much you wager has no impact on this discussion. Your argument is based around you correctly predicting a 3-leg multi. How about we talk about the multis you take when you land 2/3? Exactly... because I'm sure there are many of them, and if you counted how many horses/sports you've correctly picked for zero return, you'd hate to see it. Of course you'll hit multis from time to time, especially when short-priced favs are involved. Do me a favour and count how many runners of your losing multis have won, then calculate the significant amount of EV you've lost by not backing them as single bets. Go to the TAB promotions page. Do you see how many multi promos there are?.... There is a reason why, NM. I don't care how YOU bet, it's your money, do with it as you please. But think of me the next time you lose a multi that includes winning selections. -
So do you think the 2 horse multi is safer than the 3 , what if the first gets up but VS gets beat . But you didn't answer my question about how you would back those 3 horses in singles to make a decent profit , other than risking substantial amounts on each . If you don't call it hedging then I don't know what you call it . At those 3 prices singles aren't viable unless you can afford a substantial bet and handle a loser . I would suspect that bookies were holding a multitude of multi's running through those 3 horses , for a reason .

Another point of order re TabNZ is that they seem to always round down when your taking % bets notable Quaddies. Tabcorp give you the exact % and do no rounding up or down, a far more equitable way of doing things as far as punters/clients are concerned. It may seem moot but over the course of the year they would be doing very nicely out of it
