With the slot races the lower percentage is because the also rans get 66% of the acceptance fee back.  Slot holders for the pace pay $60k for the slots & $40k is returned as stake money for the unplaced horses.  It’s a bit of Smoke and mirrors really.  Also it artificially inflates a horses earnings. For example, If a slot holder also owns the horse that runs for them they pay $60k. If it runs 6th it earns $40k. The horse is credited with earning $40k but in reality has cost their owner $20k
