Awapuni’s long-awaited return ends in disappointment By LOVERACING.NZ News Desk Awapuni’s long-awaited return to racing on its newly renovated grass track has ended in disappointment, with their ANZAC Day meeting abandoned following a slip in the opening race. “A horse slipped on the outside,” RACE’s General Manager of Racing Brad Taylor said. “Walking the track, there is no visual slip, but we have got to have jockeys’ safety first. They are the ones going out there and riding on it and it’s on us that this has happened. “It’s really unfortunate, but we will learn from it and put the plans and processes in place to make amends for it and hopefully be back here in three weeks’ time.” The rail had been put out six metres for the meeting, and Taylor said this was done on the advice of a number of track specialists who the club has contracted over the 19-month renovation process. “There were two reasons (for putting the rail out six metres),” Taylor said. “The first one was that we had jump-outs here for local ones (horses). There was a patch at the 600m, a half-metre by half - metre square, where a rock was brought up when we were Verti-Draining and a bit of repair had to go into the track, hence why the trials went out to three metres. Then obviously we had the weather that day, we had 13ml of rain before the first (heat) and it rained throughout. There was quite a lot of damage. “It is a young, immature track, so on the advice of the experts, we moved it (rail) out six metres. People say it’s a dumb decision, but we are just following the advice of the experts. “We have had plenty of horses over it right through the process. We will go back and work with them (experts) and the plan always was for the meeting on the 17 th (of May) to go back to the true position to give that small area an extra three weeks. That will be our plan at this stage. “It is only going to get better the more horses over the top of it and a bit more maturity. The riders’ feedback was that it felt good under foot. Unfortunately, we have had this one slip that we can’t hide behind and it’s been the telling factor of the track. “We will go through the process we had leading into today, learn from it and we will come back bigger and better.” – LOVERACING.NZ News Desk

Seems to me if the problems always the first race then maybe run race 1 last, worth a go, could someone suggest to the hierarchy in charge that this is the most logical solution to the first race issues😃

It’s callouses on his arms from biting himself until he bleeds. It’s the screaming and sudden bursts of aggression that leave his younger siblings with scratches, bruises — sometimes worse. It’s screwing metal plates over electrical outlets. Replacing closet doors he ripped off the hinges. Mounting a fan to the wall after he destroyed three others — because he needs the sound to sleep, but he’ll ruin it in a moment of impulse. It’s a broken bedroom window at dawn and finding him in the backyard — where he could’ve died from the glass. There’s a pond across the street. He can’t swim. Do you know how many autistic children die by drowning? We used to keep him in our room for years just to keep him safe. We put a key lock on our bedroom door from the inside. Baby-proofed the room like our lives depended on it. Because his did. When he got too big to stay with us, we gave him his own space — only to find he would swing from the ceiling fan, flip his mattress, poop on the floor, and throw furniture. He doesn’t do it because he’s “bad.” He does it because something in his brain won’t let him rest. He doesn’t play in his poop — thank God — but there were years of explosive diarrhea while we tried to toilet train him. Two years ago, he finally stopped pooping in his diapers. That was huge. We celebrated something most parents take for granted. But it didn’t last. Not the peace. When he’s calm, it’s like watching a beautiful storm cloud finally break into sun. When the waves hit, it’s violent. Terrifying. Therapies? We’ve tried. Speech, OT, all of it. He does well for a while… then regresses into aggression so severe that the therapists drop him and tell us he needs behavior therapy — which no one around here wants to take on. It’s happened three times. We still don’t know what triggers the switch. But when it hits — it’s holes in the walls. Head slams. Arm bites. Blood. Sweat. Tears. Literally. I fixed the drywall. I can’t fix my son. After our last family trip — which went surprisingly well — he came back and started attacking the walls. Slamming his body to create huge holes. We replaced the door with a heavy-duty one after he busted through the first one during a meltdown. And the worst part? He’s in there. I know he is. There are moments — split seconds — where I see his soul peek through. A smirk. A sparkle. A flicker of peace. But this? This is not peace. This is a prison. Don’t tell me this is the next step in human evolution. Don’t call this a gift. Don’t romanticize this. This is neurological dysfunction. This is immune injury. This is a brain that cannot properly connect with the body. And he doesn’t deserve it. The autism “spectrum” has done more damage than good. Because lumping my son in with quirky geniuses and chatty tech bros has left children like him without proper diagnosis, support, or even acknowledgment. We are invisible in plain sight. And we are tired. We’ve adapted every corner of our lives just to survive. We can’t go to Easter egg hunts, or birthday parties, or anywhere without risk. I preview every race and sport under the sun - and during Covid, there wasn't a lot going on. The Marble Racing League is more entertaining than watching racing from Awapuni today.

I want to ask what you do but I'm not . There is a marble racing league ?? geez I have been missing out .

They are very clever at NZTR -  Meeting News Woodville-Pahiatua RC Nominations Re-opened   Woodville-Pahiatua RC Wednesday 30th April Nominations Re-opened untill 9.00am Monday 28th April.  Original nominations will take prefference.    Only problem is starting limit for all races is 14 - - and each race currently has more than 14 nominations 🤔

We could get a marbles league going .

So Greyhound racing is going, thoroughbred racing tracks in a real mess.  What's left

No dont think so the track performed well for the trials. They just wanted to protect the inside of the track as it is a little behind the rest of it.

I was just scrolling through the noms for Woodville (Wednesday) earlier and got to thinking that there are a hell of a lot of noms here that are starting at Awapuni, now I see why 🙄

Am I missing something , wasn't the track inside the grass built precisely for this situation , why didn't they just move to the A/W ???

Not sure if it's true but just read somewhere the inside was hammered at trials on heavy track.
