    • I refer back to my original post.  Your first sentence is fine as a punting strategy.  But makes no difference in the value vs risk.  They are two completely different things and the multi option neither loses nor gains valuie. Second sentence - I dont believe any punter believes they are getting better odds from a multi.   The multi option becomes very convenient when you punt a Heinz 57 every Saturday as I do.
    • Yes, but you manually took that $4k and placed it on something else. I see a multi as being completely different. Obviously you don't. Au Revoir.
    • Plenty to chew over from the weekend just gone. At Ayr, there was a big crowd for the Scottish National which saw Irish trainer Willie Mullins close the gap on Dan Skelton in the British Trainers' Championship with a 1-2 in an eventful race which sadly saw two fatalities, one of whom was the 2024 winner MCDERMOTT. The Scottish Champion Hurdle stayed very much at home as local trainer Ewan Whilans had his biggest ever success via CRACKING RHAPSODY, who was third in this last year and just held off the late challenge of favourite KABHIR DU MATHAN with pacesetter OO BETTY close up in third with the first three split by half a length. The new week starts with Skelton's lead over Mullins, which was once over a million quid, down to £1,500. Newbury saw the most important flat card of the season so far and it wasn't a good day for the favourites. The Group 3 Fred Darling for the 3-y-o fillies saw several tall reputations broken as 33/1 shot DUTY FIRST won convincingly by three lengths. Her juvenile form had suggested she had a bit to find with some of these but she's obviously wintered well and previous plans for a tilt at the Italian 1000 Guineas are now likely to be scrapped in favour of Newmarket for which she will need to be supplemented. With a 40/1 shot second, you could argue the form has a dubious look but this can happen at this early stage of the season and I do think given how wet the British summer was last year, a number of those who ran well on slow ground found this fast spring ground not to their liking. The Greenham for the colts saw JONQUIL restore much of his reputation with a decent win. He had won well on debut but at Doncaster just a fortnight ago he had flopped badly and connections now think it was too much too soon for this inexperienced type. He looked much better on this occasion and has a 12/1 quote for the English 2000 Guineas. RASHABAR ran a fine race in second and will doubtless also be heading for Newmarket and I was very taken by the Joseph O'Brien trained SARACEN on whom I had a small each way play, He ran home a strong third and is very much still in the notebook. There was a lot of money for the Godolphin trained AL QUDRA but he weakened tamely as did CHANCELLOR. The Group 3 for the older horses over 2400m also saw a turn up as DIVINA GRACE, who had been running in Listed class races last year, defeated a number with proven Group form. SUNWAY ran third looking as though the race would bring him on a ton. ANCIENT WISDOM was last for Godolphin with again the ground being cited as an excuse and BELLUM JUSTUM drifted like a barge in the market and ran accordingly. Over at The Curragh, an interesting card opened with GREEN SENSE, a son of Starman, a convincing winner of the first 1200m maiden for the juveniles and looks a lively early contender for the Coventry.  The most interesting race on the card was the Group 3 Alleged for the older horses over 2000m. This was due to feature the return of Arc third LOS ANGELES but he was taken out due to being off his feed. Aidan O'Brien had a more than capable second option in English Leger winner, the unbeaten JAN BRUEGHEL who had been touted as a Melbourne Cup contender but his 100% record went down over this shorter trip and on ground on which he looked much less than comfortable to GALEN, like GREEN SENSE, from the Jospeh O'Brien yard. I wonder if this could be the year Joseph starts to emerge from his father's shadow - he has, as part of his team, Kevin Blake, who works as an occasional analyst on ITV Racing and, as we say up here, "knows his onions". He does the race planning for Joseph and he's probably the best analyst and race reader we have currently (apart from me, obviously). GALEN was race fit from three runs at Meydan and they put on cheekpieces for the first time and they probably realised first time up on quick ground over the shorter distance was the ideal time to catch out JAN BRUEGHEL and so it proved. GALEN is in both the Mooresbridge and the Group 1 Tattersalls Gold Cup at the end of May - as for JAN BREUGHEL, he lost little in defeat and has a 12/1 quote for the Coronation Cup at Epsom on Derby day. A quick note from France - ZARIGANA was a smooth winner of the Group 3 Grotte over 1609m and I suspect her main target will be the Diane rather than the Pouliches.
    • I was just amazed that the TAB had J Mac at 12s to win the champs comp over the 2 days,, ok he wasn't there last week so started on zero, but with the leader from the first day only on 5 points and with the rides J Mac had on the second day he was a given to me, ended up finishing 2 points clear of J Collet, very happy with the result.
    • If you invest $1000 in a stock and it increases to $4000, and then you choose to put that $4000 into another stock and it devalues to $0, you have lost $4000, not $1000. I think we'll have to agree to disagree on this one.
    • 28 Northern trained horses entered for Foxton trials tomorrow, that's probably adding an extra 4 or 5 heats to the day. Should be a good day's trailing on a nice deck and a decent track.  3: Te Aroha (Peter Lock) 4: Te Awamutu (Brent Gillovic) 10: Matamata (Kurtis Pertab, Paul Pertab, Cody Cole, Daniel Miller) 11: Cambridge (Sam Mynott, Clinton Isdale, Alex Oliveira, Hollie Wynyard)
    • Interesting comment from Richie Callender in Aussie….. CONSTANT TALK OF MONEY DOES RACING NO GOOD When racing talks money money money all it does is distance our sport from the average Aussie and makes us look elitist. Constant stories about breaking prizemoney records of $50 million plus serves no purpose. Constant spruiking about one million and two million dollar horse sales does the sport no good.  We need some humility to stay relevant. ■ ■ ■ ■ ■
    • I think the same is also true of suspensions which I why I had initially suggested it.  Memory is a little hazy and I stand to be corrected but pretty sure this got discussed a couple years back when Opie made 3 or 4 fall at the winning post of a black type race, and was punished a lot harsher than another rider who had caused a fall in a lower rated race the week prior...
    • Not really. The money never passes through their hands. Their ticket or online account will only say a $20 bet. They only ever paid $20. It's one way a $20 punter can gather a bigger pot, but it's a stretch to call them a $100 punter. If the bet loses, you lose $20, not $100. Your treble isn't worth anything until after 3 legs get home, your quaddie 4 legs. A multi is the same, however many legs you've chosen to include.
    • A member of our group takes $1000 3 horse Multi’s on shorties about 6 times a year Always in premier races and anchors the favs. He has a very high success rate and invariably turns the bet into a return in the $5k to $7k range. Never cashed out. The bet is all duck no dinner. Selection of premier races is the key, top horses, ace riders, fair track and all in disclosed form with results likely in favour of the gun horses, Via Sistena, Fangirl, etc etc He spends probably $6k a year on 6 bets. That equates to $120 odd a week, let’s say the average punters bets. Landing 4 out of 6 gives him 25k return pa on a $6k investment … profit circa $20k There is another side to the debate maybe
    • First point is your maths is really bad. Secondly, Saturdays multi won't be typical of your long term results. Percentages will be higher every time when you put your multis on and more runners will SP higher rather than lower than what you've got on your tickets. Lastly, you're lucky Frosty did the right thing and got your first one home by breaking the rules on Saturday.
    • Well you have an obsession about something.  Your answer is?
    • I'm not sure I'm allowed to answer as I might upset you @Insider
    • It does show the big difference between NZ and Australia. Listen to any Aussie rugby or league game and they will often refer to race-meetings and often use racing terms. You never hear that in NZ. Racing is a fully integrated sport in Australia, treated just like any other sport. We will never get to that point in NZ.
    • Northerner Canterbury Man ( now that’s an oxymoron) will definitely have the answer to your question.
    • When will NZTR wake up and program what the majority of connections want for a young horses education?....regular grass trials! 🙈 Feel for owners of northern trained runners having to fork out excess travel costs just to trial and educate them so many miles and hours away. 😢
    • Just proves how naive previous administrations have been and that goes for much of the western world , allowing your self to be dependent on China is a serious mistake .  China has suspended exports of certain rare earth minerals and magnets that are crucial for the world’s car, semiconductor and aerospace industries
    • The orange clown still waiting for China to call…..🙈 China struck back at U.S. tariffs with an export pause China has suspended exports of certain rare earth minerals and magnets that are crucial for the world’s car, semiconductor and aerospace industries. The move is in retaliation after President Trump’s sharp increase in tariffs. The metals and the special magnets made with them can now be shipped out of China only with special export licenses. But Beijing has barely started setting up a system for issuing the licenses. Industry executives said that supplies of minerals and products outside the country could run low. Trump’s rapidly escalating trade war with China has scrambled prospects for many global businesses. And there is no end in sight, my colleagues Ana Swanson and Ben Casselman report. The U.S. administration has been waiting for the Chinese leader, Xi Jinping, to call Trump, but Beijing appears wary of putting Xi in an unpredictable situation with the U.S. president. Charm offensive: Today, Xi will arrive in Vietnam, his first stop on a weeklong tour that will also take him to Malaysia and Cambodia. He is expected to oversee the signing of around 40 agreements, including deals that would advance plans for Vietnam to accept Chinese loans for part of a $8.3 billion railway connecting northern Vietnam with China.
    • Ok found this which probably explains the situation and confirms what Pak said. General Whip Penalty Provisions • No warnings will be issued for breaches of the whip Rules in any Black-Type race. • In all breaches of the whip Rules in any Black-Type race, the starting point for a fine will be an amount equal to 50% of the Jockey’s share of the stake earned by their mount or the starting point on the whip penalty table, whichever is greater, and may be in addition to any suspension imposed as above. • When considering an appropriate penalty, a rider’s whip record over the preceding 6 months will be taken into account.
